Parent Volunteer Information

Having you involved in the education of your child is vital to their success. Please let me know when you would be able to come and help in our classroom, so I can plan projects that need more supervision during that time. You are always welcome in your child’s classroom, but some advance notice will be helpful when doing lesson plans

Dear parents/guardians,

I am looking forward to meeting you and your child. I am very excited about teaching your child this year.

I want you to be aware of my practices and procedures so you know what is expected in the classroom and of your child. There are four rules that will be applied in the classroom. They are as follows:

1.)    We don’t hurt with our hands, feet or words.

2.)    Be respectful to others.

3.)    Speak only at appropriate times using appropriate voices.

4.)    Listen to all directions and rules the first time they are given.

If any of the rules are broken the management plan goes into action. The management plan will be applied as follows:

1st  consequence: Stays on the green light and receives a verbal warning.

2nd  consequence: Moves to yellow light receives a second warning.

3rd  consequence: Moves to red light and is removed from the group to a quiet area.

4th  consequence: Parents are notified.

Severe disruption: Sent immediately to the office.

Every child will begin the day on the green light and will be moved according to his/her behavior. Each child will have a sticker chart in his/her daily folder. If the child remains on the green or yellow light for the entire day he/she will get a sticker on his/her chart. This is a form of praise for the child and also a way for you as the parent to keep an eye on how your child is behaving in class.  As a part of my management plan I also believe that good behavior should be recognized. I will make sure that I not only handle disruptions but also notice children for doing what he/she is told. Praise will play a large role in the classroom, I want each and every child to feel like they belong and are an important part of the classroom.

Kindergarten Classroom Management Plan

2010-2011

Each student has three cards, red, yellow, and green like a stop light. Each day the student begins on the green card.  The student will receive a green sticker on the behavior chart in the back of the daily folder if they remain on green for the entirety of the day.

If their behavior warrants disciplinary action, the green card is turned to yellow.  This is a verbal warning and a discussion with the child will be held as to why he/she turned his/her card. In addition, the student will receive a yellow sticker on the behavior chart in the back of the daily folder. This will help the student recognize unruly behavior and make better choices; as well as notify the parent of a discipline issue.

If the behavior persists, the yellow card is turned to red and the student will have to fill out a problem/solution report drawing a picture of why they are on red for the day.  This contract is discussed with the child and is signed by the student and teacher.  It requires a parent signature and should be returned in the daily folder the next day.  This will reinforce student accountability and consequences for his/her behavior on a daily basis and keep the parent informed. He/She will not receive any sticker on his/her behavior chart.

If the behavior continues the child will be sent to the office for administrative action.

If behavior is an issue, we will need to meet to look for possible patterns or triggers of behavior and design an individual plan that will meet the needs of your child.

 Future Kindergartners:

What Can I do to Prepare my Child for Kindergarten?

Laughing kidsIn kindergarten, your child will develop skills in each of the following areas below. However, kindergarten makes up only a small part of each day. The key to a successful school year is a strong partnership between home and school.

Review the activities below and congratulate yourself on how much you are already doing to prepare your child for kindergarten. Then select a few new activities you can introduce to your child. Place emphasis on trying a new activity rather than mastering the skill. By emphasizing that you can learn by playing, you will show your child that learning is fun as well as important!

Preparing your child in the following areas will help prepare them for Kindergarten.

Reading and Language

  • Read to your child every day.
  • Read by yourself to set a good example.
  • Give your child many reading materials to explore and writing materials to use.
  • Visit the library often, and participate in story times and other activities there.
  • Read aloud signs like "No Parking" and "Exit" and talk about what the signs mean.
  • Sing songs & say nursery rhymes together.
  • Play with alphabet letters, and help your child to identify letter names and words that begin with the sound the letter makes.
  • Use new and different words to describe what you see, hear, and feel. Do this to help your child develop language skills.
  • Encourage your child to write notes using scribble writing and pretend spelling.
  • Turn a shoe box into a mail box and use it to send notes to each other. Take turns reading what you have "written."
Math Readiness

  • Make a simple recipe together. Count and measure ingredients. Note how long it takes to complete your creation.
  • Use a calendar to plan special events. Count the days until an event happens.
  • Use a growth chart to measure height.
  • Play simple math games with dice, cards, and dominoes.
  • Practice saying your phone number and address together.
  • Count forward and backward with your child. For example, "Three, two, one, let’s go!"
  • Find things to count with your child, such as...
    • How many bites does it takes to eat a banana?
    • How many things at home are shaped like a circle? a square? a triangle?
    • How many shoes or books are in your home?
    • How many steps does it takes to cross a room?
    • How many steps does it take to climb up stairs?
      • Add to the fun, by stapling paper together and making a "How Many?" book to keep track of what you have counted.
